Building Defects – How to Deal With Them
Building defects, should they occur are mostly the responsibility of the property owner but is more often than not discovered by tenants. They are quite easy to deal with should the landlord be amiable to resolve the issue quickly but with some difficult landlords, a more stern approach should be taken. Renters have rights as to protection from hazards that exist within properties they occupy as part of their contract with the landlord making sure the premises always maintains safe and acceptable living standards.
One thing to remember is to first go with a verbal notice, ignorance of which should be followed by a written request. The written request also serves as a paper trail which would serve as proof for your complaint with housing authorities. If the landlord still refuses to address the specific issues that are in existence on the property, then notification of the proper state and local authorities can be undertaken. You run the risk of getting thrown out but you’d be assured that any subsequent renters to the property you used to occupy would not suffer the same fate as you did.
